What is Orthodontics

Orthodontics is the specialty of dentistry involved in fixing the patient’s bite and alignment of teeth. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends a patient be screened by the age of 7 to detect any early problems with the bite.

Meet our Board Certified Orthodontist

Dr. Bethany Chong

Board Certified Orthodontist

Watching someone’s smile transform and their confidence grow as a result of something you helped create makes my job the best job in the world! I feel incredibly blessed and privileged as an orthodontist to be able to impact lives in this way and it’s what motivates me to provide the best quality of care and overall experience for my patients every day.

I am originally a Texas gal, but moved out to sunny SoCal for orthodontic residency where I met my wonderful husband Nick, who’s a physician at Kaiser. When not practicing orthodontics, I love going to the beach, exploring new restaurants in LA, snow boarding and traveling to new places.

Dr. Samuel S. Lee, DDS, MS

Board Certified Orthodontist

“There’s nothing more rewarding to me than knowing you have helped improve the life of another person. In orthodontics, every day I get a chance to help someone feel that way. In the midst of working to create a healthy and beautiful smile, the most beautiful transformation is watching how much this translates into a patient’s personality and confidence.

When not practicing orthodontics, my life is consumed by my beautiful wife Cindy and my amazing three children, Caleb, Christopher and Caris. My favorite sports teams are the Lakers, Dodgers, 49ers and anything UCLA, go Bruins!”

Common problems in orthodontics

What problems can be treated with orthodontics?

Orthodontics can benefit a patient as early as the age of 7 and well into adulthood. Orthodontic treatment can help correct and improve skeletal asymmetries, bite problems, severely crowded teeth. With orthodontic treatment, the alignment of teeth and the bite will not only be esthetically improved, but most importantly, play part in improving overall dental health.

Here are some of the common conditions treated with orthodontics:

Skeletal asymmetry – Sometimes the jaw may not be growing in the right direction. Early diagnosis and treatment can correct the skeletal position, possibly avoiding the need for surgery at a later time.

Bite problems – Bite problems such as overbite, underbite, crossbite and teeth not coming together properly can all be corrected with orthodontics.

Crowding and spacing – Crowding or spacing are common orthodontic problems. These problems can occur for many reasons and can be corrected with the proper orthodontic appliances.

Aesthetic problems – A beautiful straight smile may be marred by a single misaligned tooth. This tooth can be realigned with orthodontic appliances.

Orthodontic Solutions

Some common orthodontic appliances that are used in our practice are listed below. Feel free to ask questions about any of these treatments.

Fixed orthodontic braces – A metal or ceramic bracket is placed on each tooth, and a wire is inserted through each bracket. When the desired results are achieved, the fixed dental braces are completely removed.

Skeletal Appliances – There are a few orthodontic appliances that we use in our practice. These appliance are used to correct crossbites, severe overbites or underbites, preventing the possible need for future extractions or surgery.

Invisalign – A series of clear, plastic aligners that gradually position your teeth and bite in the right position.
